Askie
Voice-first educational AI for kids, with a UK company and parent dashboard.
Our verdict: pass
Read the rationale below. This is not a certification, endorsement, or guarantee of safety.
- What it is
- An AI study buddy and creative helper for children: voice chat, text, stories, and filtered image generation, marketed as built for kids rather than a general chatbot with a filter.
- Age guidance
- Public pages and family terms describe ages 4–15. Parent (18+) creates the account; child profiles are parent-managed.
- Parent controls
- PIN-protected parent settings, family dashboard with conversation review (especially with Cloud Sync), usage limits by plan, and experimental safety 'heads-up' alerts. Free and paid tiers change voice/text/image allowances.
- Privacy / data (UK/EU framing)
- Askie Kids AI Limited states primary databases and child profile data are hosted in the EU (Amsterdam). Claims COPPA and GDPR compliance; legal basis includes parental consent. Registered with the UK ICO (reference ZC154927 — verify on ico.org.uk). Uses Google Gemini (and OpenAI backup) for real-time generation; policy says providers do not store queries for training. Default: conversation history stays on device unless Cloud Sync is on. Sub-processors include analytics/attribution tools (e.g. PostHog, Google Analytics, Meta/Facebook, AppsFlyer) on the website/service stack — review cookie consent carefully.
Why this verdict
Pass for many UK families who want a dedicated kids AI with parental visibility and a UK/EU data footprint.
Askie’s privacy policy is unusually specific for a consumer kids app: EU primary hosting, ICO registration claim, parental rights spelled out, and a clear statement that AI providers are not used to train on child chats.
Stay aware
- Marketing leans on COPPA as well as GDPR — fine for US rules, but UK parents should still judge against the Children’s Code (high privacy defaults, parental involvement, not profiling for ads).
- Analytics and ad attribution vendors appear in the processor list for the wider platform; treat website cookie choices seriously.
- Cloud Sync being on by default for premium accounts means more conversation data leaves the device — turn it off if that is not what you want.
